WoW CN Will Start Charging at Month-End?

If you are a WoW US or EU user, you can't image how dramatic the players in China have been through. The game was offline in June, caused by the local operator switch and the government censorship. At the end of July, WoW CN was back online for a beta, which was scheduled to run for 7 days. However, the beta test phase lasts until now. Players can play this MMO for free during the beta, but according to an industry source, Netease (the current operator) may start charging for World of Warcraft at the end of this month.

Speculations come intensively since Blizzard has licensed "World of Warcraft" to Netease. It is said that China's General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) may approve the game this week, although this rumor remains unconfirmed by Netease. Play in beta is free currently, but WoW time cards have been distributed to the channels since June. Some game agents start selling their stocks to the market now, and it might suggest the relaunch day is approaching.

According to Blizzard's head of International Operations, Michael Ryder, Blizzard is working with the Chinese government to get the final approvals, and they have made a tremendous amount of progress in a short period of time in transitioning. They feel pretty good about it and hope the rest of the approvals will get in the near future.

Meanwhile, Song, the director the office of online publishing management within the GAPP's department of technology and digital publishing, said that a panel of experts discovered violent, gory and disturbing content in Netease's version of World of Warcraft now under review. They considered the content was hazardous to minors' mental health and the Eastern cultures could not directly import Westernized games without making some alterations.

Whether World of Warcrft will get the final approval this week is unknown so far. Netease has announced that WoW China will only start charging when it fully relaunch.
