WoW Increased in Subscription in August

World of Warcraft is facing big challenges with the coming of Aion and other new MMOs. Even Blizzard itself is focus on developing another game. Date from comScore MediaMetrix shows that there are 13.1 million unique WoW users globally in August. So the audience size is actually increasing. The date is based on nearly 2 million MMO players who have agreed to anonymously share application activity with comScore MediaMetrix.

In May of 2009, Activision announced that the number of subscribers to the game has apparently leveled off: they were holding steady at 11.5 million. And the numbers are still going up since then.

For this one-month increase in subscriptions, some people think "August also represents the end of summer and the start of school, along with moving into dorms or college towns and collecting some back-to-school allowances, presumably for school supplies, but perhaps WoW counts as one of those?". Some believe that "most of the recent increase has come from players outside of the United States, particularly from China. Over the summer, there was a lot of friction between WoW and the Chinese government, forcing Blizzard to temporarily shut down the entire game for long periods of time. Only recently has it come back up, seemingly for good. This, in addition to the reasons listed above could account for the rise and recent spike."
